The Spanish traffic authority has announced a new system which can detect foreign number-plated cars exceeding the speed limit. During the summer months between 30-40% speeding drivers have foreign plates and many are not been fined.
The new system has been installed on four speed traps so far: the AP-7 in Castellón, the A7 in Murcia, the A-31 in Alicante and the A-52 in Zamora.
When the speed trap detects a foreign number plate breaking the speed limit a photograph is taken and sent to León where the fines are processed. At the same time local Trafico agents receive a message with details of the offence so that they can inform the driver who has been caught speeding.
