The Iberia Ground Staff Unions have voted in favour of strike action in support of the pilots who are already on strike in protest over the creation of the low cost airline Iberia Express. They believe the new service will result in lower wages with as many as 5,000 jobs lost. It is expected they will also be supported by cabin crew and a meeting on Friday will decide this.
Ground Staff plan to walk out on all Fridays and Mondays from 3rd February onwards. The workers committee for ground staff represents nearly 15,000 workers in offices, customer service, plane maintenance and others have voted in favour of the stoppages. The maintenance union abstained saying it is waiting for a decision from its members in an assembly.
The pilots have called three more dates for stoppages on the 25th, 27th and 29th of January.
