2011 was Spain’s hottest year since records first began in 1961 with the average temperature for the year at 16.7ºC which is 0.3ºC above the previous hottest year of 2006.
It was 1.49ºC above the normal average and described as “very hot to extremely hot” for practically all of Spain.
The hottest day was in Andalucía on August 19th when Moron de la Frontera in Seville reached 42.5ºC. There were also very hot days in the north at the end of June when Bilbao and Orense both topped more than 40ºC.
The year has also been drier than normal with rainfall 7% below forecasts.
The coldest day in Spain was on January 23rd in Molina de Aragon in Guadalajara when the thermometer dropped to -13.6ºC.
