Spain’s civil protection unit have activated their Snow Plan as an Atlantic front is crossing the country from west to east. Drivers are asked not to use their cars in the most affected areas in the centre and south east of the country and on access roads to large cities.
Seven provinces are on Orange Alert for heavy snow today - Jaen, Granada, Almeria, Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and Castellon. The snow line is between 700m and 1,100m and 1,200 on the Balearic Islands.
If you are flying into Malaga Airport and travelling to Granada or the Sierra Nevada allow a lot of extra time for the journey between Malaga and your destination.
Asturias, Cantabria, Palencia, Burgos, La Rioja, Avila, Segovia, the Madrid Sierra, Soria, Zaragoza, Teruel, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Albacete and Almeria are also on a lower depth snow alert.
If you have to travel by road take special care and be on the look-out for black ice. If you are about to arrive in Spain and hiring a car in one of the affected areas ask the car rental company to provide snow chains. It is also recommended that you pack some warm clothes and a mobile phone with a replacement battery or car charger.
